I'm not sure when we went to Dayton's, there is a slight family conflict on this fact.* I say we went on Christmas eve and it was late enough so that all of the Day after Christmas Sale signs were set. Steve, he said that it was the day after Christmas. Since this is my blog...I was right and that's the story I'll tell.
*Betsy solved the mystery...it was Christmas Eve!
We are having another problem, when did we get this tree. We don't know. It had to be in the 90's. So here is the story.
We went to Dayton's and saw this tree on display. We asked if we could get it then or did we have to wait until the day after Christmas. Our clerk, Marilynn Rockne, called the manager and he said, let them have it...instead of 50% off he gave us 40%. That meant we didn't have to get up at 6:00 AM to fight the crowds...that sounded good to us. We then asked for the box...
Almost immediately, remember the store was closing and it WAS Christmas Eve, a stockroom employee came out with the box AND a box cutter. He was going to cut off all of the lights. We asked if we could try to put it in the box with the lights on it. We all struggled to get it in the box. Since I don't do a great job of getting anything back in any box, I am fairly certain that I just stood by and gave my good or even better ideas that would make it work.
We always wonder who put the lights on the tree in the first place? Wonder if there was a sale on lights that didn't connect continuously... OR...maybe the continuous Christmas tree lights hadn't been invented....hmmmmm
Each year we bring down the tree. We wonder if the tree will light up again. This year Steve said if the lights didn't work, we would throw the "pathetic tree" out.
Every year since we bought it, we take it out of the box...and plug it in...
And the lights come on and we are amazed! Really amazed!!
Without the decorations, it really is a pathetic little tree. But then we fill it with the ornaments that belong to that tree and it soon looks beautiful.
So for today, this little Christmas tree, is one of my favorite things....
Think about it...what are your favorite things? Do they make you smile? Share them with someone.
